NFC Forum Announces Finalists: Touching the Future Global Competition

Winners to be Announced at WIMA NFC Developers Summit, Monaco, April 29, 2008

 

WAKEFIELD, Mass., USA, April 2, 2008 The NFC Forum, www.https://nfc-forum.org, , a non-profit industry association that advances the use of Near Field Communication (NFC) technology, today announced it has selected 20 finalists for its Touching the Future: NFC Forum Global Competition. Total entries for the competition span the globe, representing 21 countries.

 

In the competition, developers in a Commercial Track vie for the honor of having their solutions named “The Best NFC Service of the Year 2008,” while a Research Track recognizes “The Most Innovative NFC Research Project of the Year 2008.”.

The 10 finalists in the Commercial Track are:

Near Field Communication (NFC) is a standards-based, short-range wireless connectivity technology that enables simple and safe two-way interactions among electronic devices. NFC technology allows consumers to perform contactless transactions, access digital content and connect devices with the simplicity of a single touch. NFC technology provides global interoperability of contactless identification and interconnection technologies.

 

“All of us at the NFC Forum are impressed by both the number of submissions we received and the quality of the solutions,” said Gerhard Romen, NFC Forum vice-chairman. “Our finalists demonstrate that NFC technology is not only bringing new capabilities to existing applications, but also enabling a whole array of new and innovative solutions across many vertical markets.”

The competition promotes the development and deployment of innovative and exemplary NFC services. The Commercial Track is for NFC services based on a business case; the Research Track is for university students and Research institutions. Both Tracks require a prototype.

Commercial Track entries are evaluated on how successfully and innovatively their solutions meet the needs of key vertical market segments, as well as quality of design and implementation. Research Track submissions are judged on creativity and innovativeness. Each team of finalists will deliver a presentation and live demonstration at the NFC Developers Summit, held in Monaco, during the WIMA NFC Developers Summit (www.wima.mc), on April 29, 2008. The jury, composed of senior and recognized professionals and experts from academia and sponsoring companies will vote to select first-, second- and third-place winners for each Track. At WIMA, winners will be announced at an awards ceremony on April 29; a press conference will be held on April 30.
