NFC Digital Product Passport Candidate Technical Specification

A product passport data carrier is a physical tag or code that links a product to its online Digital Product Passport (DPP). The NFC Digital Product Passport (NDPP) candidate specification enables the use of NFC tags for such data carriers. It defines a flexible NFC Data Exchange Format (NDEF) message structure targeted to hold the different types of data that could be stored on such data carriers. This message structure is able to carry one or more Uniform Resource Identifiers (URIs) pointing to the online DPP. Additionally, it can contain a subset of the data of the online DPP to support offline situations as well as supplemental data. For example, providing up-to-date information about the current state of the product.

The NDEF message structure uses the URI Record Type Definition (RTD) and Multiple URI RTDs as building blocks but also defines new RTDs specifically for the DPP use case.
