The last 15 years have been a blur of change and success for NFC technology. According to the new position paper from the NFC Forum the next 15 years will be equally transformative for the billions of people that use NFC technology daily. The NFC Forum 15-Year Position Paper: Accomplishments and the Future was published to celebrate the NFC Forum’s 15th year anniversary as a technology organization and recognize the future possibilities.
Over the last decade and a half, the NFC Forum has laid the foundation for one of the most successful technologies in use today. NFC technology is a standard feature on billions of smartphones delivering convenient, secure, tap-based interactions with an intuitive, simplified, reliable experience to users around the globe. NFC early adopter markets include Mobility, Identity and Transport; Automotive; Retail and Payment and Internet-of-Things.
NFC Forum 15-Year Position Paper: Accomplishments and the Future outlines how NFC technology combined with Artificial Intelligence (AI), Augmented Reality (AR), Blockchain, Industry 4.0, 5G and other technologies, applications and market segments, especially health care, will create an increasingly interconnected world in the near future. NFC’s unique technology means it acts as the “great enabler” pairing and connecting devices and solutions for people.
It is the interface between humans and the digital world.
This new more interconnected world will move humanity far beyond the reach of wired networks, strengthening security for critical applications, empowering users to exercise control, providing user interfaces where none exists, extending online access into areas without electrical power and bringing intelligence to physical objects. Looking Ahead: A Brighter Future
Nostradamus missed the mark. He never predicted the enormous impact NFC would have on humanity.
Looking ahead to the next 15 years, the NFC Forum will be focused on driving greater adoption and use by making it easier for consumers and implementers to use NFC technology with whatever technologies it is combined with. This will entail extending and enhancing the “tap and go” paradigm to deliver increased capabilities to the end user and supporting industry efforts to deliver higher data rates and maintain a secure touch paradigm. Other key future themes for the NFC Forum include:
- Allowing a parallel and seamless use of different form factors and standards
- Ensuring backward compatibility with current Forum specifications
- Enhancing interoperability by fully relying on standardized technologies
- Supporting scalable security based on the application or a fixed level defined by the NFC Forum
