Vision NFC: Agenda for Simplifying the Digital Product Passport

On Tuesday 8th October, NFC Forum will welcome industry leaders, innovators, and stakeholders to its latest Vision NFC event, Simplifying the Digital Product Passport (DPP). Collocated with the Forum’s 2024 European Member Meeting in Nice, France, the Vision NFC event will facilitate collaboration throughout the connected device ecosystem, helping drive towards a more sustainable future.

The agenda for the event has now been announced and will see keynote speeches and fireside panel sessions explore how NFC technology can drive the development, ease of use, and adoption of the DPP initiative in the European Union and beyond.

Agenda at a glance

The event will begin with a welcome address shared by NFC Forum Board Chair Preeti Ohri Khemani and Executive Director Mike McCamon, reflecting on the successful adoption of NFC technologies that have enabled our contactless present and NFC Forum’s role in enabling a connected DPP future.

Join Philippe Dubois, Senior Vice President Secure Transactions & Identification at NXP Semiconductors, will present the opening keynote, "NFC-Enabled DPP: Bringing Trust, Traceability and Efficiency in Circular Processes". Dubois will explore the evolution of NFC, its game-changing role of connected digital product identities, and how it’s paving the way to a smarter, more conscious, and more sustainable world. Discover how NFC technology can enhance product traceability, foster consumer knowledge and trust, whilst driving operational efficiency. He will discuss distinct NFC technology advantages and their suitability for different applications, all to deliver on product sustainability goals.

This will be followed by two industry keynote speeches. The first will come from Thomas L. Roedding, Chair JTC 24 Digital Product Passport – Framework and System, covering “Emerging Standards and the DPP”. This session will share progress and considerations from a CEN and CENELEC perspective on present and potential future capabilities of data carriers when implementing a DPP System.

Klaus Roehrle from Sony, and Chair of the NFC Forum Devices and Applications Working Group, will then provide an overview of the NFC Forum's planned NFC Digital Product Passport (NDPP) specification, current timeline, and open decisions about this work. As part of this session, Klaus and several guests will demonstrate the use of NFC technologies operating within a DPP ecosystem, along with discussing new specifications that will support on-device static and dynamic DPP data.

Next up is a panel session entitled “Comparing and Contrasting Data Carriers”. This panel will discuss the various data carriers for DPPs, including QR codes, RAIN RFID, and NFC Form tags. Experts will compare and contrast these technologies, evaluating their advantages, limitations, and suitability for different applications in enhancing product transparency and sustainability. Confirmed panelists so far include Jasmine Shih, Marketing Director at SAG RFID, Amir Khoshniyati, Executive Vice President and General Manager at Identiv IoT and Bud Courville, RFID Project Manager at EM Microelectronics.

The final panel, Conscious Brands, will see brand leaders discuss the experiences and opportunities for DPP in the market and will be moderated by Fabrizio Rinaldi, Ex-Armani and Versace Digital Lead, now Head of Connected Solutions at Fedrigoni. Panelists will bring case studies to life on how NFC technologies are being used to create a new level of connection with consumers, develop trust and deliver brand sustainability goals. These panelists will include Iris Skrami, Co-Founder & CSO at Renoon, Roberto Candelu, Enterprise Architect and Innovation at OTB Group (which encompasses Diesel, Jil Sander, Maison Margiela, Victor & Rolf, and Amiri) and Lucas Bond, Founder of BoardPushers.com.

The day will finish with an evening reception on the rooftop of the Anantara Plaza Hotel, to celebrate the 20th Anniversary celebration for the NFC Forum. Refreshments, snacks, networking and gorgeous views of the Mediterranean Sea will all be on offer to attendees.

Driving sustainable strategies

The Vision NFC event aims to foster wider industry dialogue, collaboration, and innovation, as we embrace a more transparent and sustainable future. Ensuring sustainability is a key focus area for NFC Forum, with a commitment to establishing standards that align with sustainable product development and foster seamless user experiences across all geographies, industries, and products.

The NFC Forum is currently exploring the creation of the NFC Digital Product Passport (NDPP) standard, helping to develop data content standardization to help NFC fulfil its role in the circular economy. NFC Digital Product Passport (NDPP) will be a standard where chips and tags can store a link to connect products to an online DPP accessed from a standard consumer mobile phone. The NDPP Standard also plans to allow some or all DPP data to be directly stored then embedded into products using the same chip or tag used for an online DPP connection.
