Tap & Connect: How NFC Enhances the IoT

Guest Blog: Erich Reisenhofer, Vice – Chairman, NFC Forum IoT Special Interest Group

On November 15th I presented “Tap & Connect: How NFC Enhances the IoT” to an international audience of decision makers from multiple industries including manufacturing, automotive, logistics and transport at the Industry of Things World East USA 2018. The presentation took place at the Hyatt Regency Orlando International Airport in Florida.

Industry of Things World East USA 2018 brought together an audience interested in the future of the smart manufacturing and industrial IoT business. I presented to decision makers on the unique role that NFC technology could have in the future of Industrial IoT applications.

By 2020, it is expected that there will be 36 billion devices connected to the IoT. These devices will need commissioning, connection and control by some form of technology. NFC technology has the ability to simplify industrial IoT solutions by allowing a simpler connection to smart products with an easy “tap”, faster authentication and more secure access to materials. It provides easier network access and data sharing, the ability to connect the unconnected and the ability for users to connect on their terms.

During my presentation I presented real-life examples of how NFC technology is simplifying the IoT including timing relays in the industrial industry and soccer balls in the sports industry. NFC really is everywhere from industrial to consumer.

The NFC Forum recognizes that the IoT industry presents a great opportunity for NFC technology to continue to expand throughout the world. Because of this, the Internet of Things Special Interest group is working to encourage the adoption of NFC technology in the IoT industry by creating industry use cases, promoting further research into the industry and establishing liaisons to further collaboration efforts.
