Apple Pay set to debut in Japan with a little help from Sony

Apple announced that the iPhone 7, iPhone 7 Plus and Apple Watch Series 2 will bring customers in Japan the ability to use Apple Pay beginning in October.

Users can commute and pay for everyday items with Suica from JR East and make private credit and prepaid card purchases in stores, apps and on the web, according to an Apple press release. Apple is also introducing support for transit in Japan with Maps in iOS 10 so commuters can find ride details, including fare breakdowns that automatically show Suica pricing right on their device.

Next generation iPhone owners in Japan may soon be able to use their smartphones to pay for train, subways, and bus rides. Bloomberg reports that Apple is planning to add FeliCa technology — the wireless standard used by Japan’s mass transit systems to accept payments —  to its next iPhone, allowing users to store virtual pay-as-you-go passes in their Wallet app, and touch their phone to station barriers to travel.

It was exactly a year ago today that Samsung Pay launched. Of course, it only launched in South Korea and then the US, now it is available in a few more countries. Samsung Pay has seen some pretty impressive success over its first year of being around. The biggest reason for that is the marketing that Samsung has, as well as the ease of use for Samsung Pay. The company bought LoopPay before they launched Samsung Pay. And in that purchase they got their hands on some MST technology. This allows Samsung to be able to use their contactless payment service just about anywhere, without merchants needing to upgrade their terminals. Meaning that just about every store, or restaurant were immediately compatible with Samsung Pay.

EMVCo intros streamlined approvals for mobile payment devices

The EMV Technical body EMVCo has announced that it has implemented a formal approval process to confirm that contactless mobile payment-enabled devices can operate seamlessly with EMV Level 1-approved payment acceptance terminals.

According to a press release, this is the first time that EMVCo has provided formal certification for contactless mobile payment devices.

The new approval process incorporates Level 1 tests traditionally managed by the individual payment systems, bringing efficiencies to the process and reducing time to market, the release said.
