What is NFC?

Near Field Communication (NFC) is a standards-based short-range wireless connectivity technology that makes life easier and more convenient for consumers around the world by making it simpler to make transactions, exchange digital content, and connect electronic devices with a touch. NFC is compatible with hundreds of millions of contactless cards and readers already deployed worldwide.

ABOUT THE TECHNOLOGY:
Near Field Communication (NFC) is a contact-less communication technology based on a radio frequency (RF) field using a base frequency of 13.56 MHz. NFC technology is perfectly designed to exchange data between two devices through a simple touch gesture.

WHAT IT DOES:
NFC is a standards-based short-range wireless connectivity technology that makes your smartphones, wearables, tablets and other devices even smarter.

NFC IN ACTION:
NFC provides a range of benefits to consumers and businesses through its inherent advantageous characteristics:

– Intuitive: NFC interactions require no more than a simple touch
– Versatile: NFC is ideally suited to the broadest range of industries, environments, and uses
– Open and standards-based: The underlying layers of NFC technology follow universally implemented ISO, ECMA, and ETSI standards
– Technology-enabling: NFC facilitates fast and simple setup of wireless technologies, such as Bluetooth, WiFi, etc.)
– Inherently secure: NFC transmissions are short range (from a touch to a few centimeters)
– Interoperable: NFC works with existing contactless card technologies
– Security-ready: NFC has built-in capabilities to support secure applications

Suica card, originally started as an e-ticket, has become one of the important elements of JR East MaaS service. This session presents JR East MaaS example using “Suica card”.

How the pandemic proved the benefits of contactless.

Transit agencies are developing pilots and programs that foster a fluid and linked transportation system incorporating all modes to deliver people to their destination in a seamless fashion, enabling truly complete or point-to-point trips. As transit and the mobility ecosystem continually ebb and flow in response to users mobility needs and preferences, and now face the new challenge of COVID-19 recovery and restoration of service, what role will MaaS play in the transit system of today and tomorrow?

Calypso is an open contactless ticketing standard for the transport world built on values of openness, security and interoperability, managed by the CNA association.

In response to operators’ demand for dematerialization, CNA has specified and implemented all possible solutions to integrate Calypso into NFC smartphones: applet for SIM cards or Secure Element, HCE solution. These Calypso/NFC solutions bring unquestionably the best ergonomics to the customer, a better flow management and a better security to the operator. They are perfectly adapted to MaaS because they allow operators to offer travelers seamless, end-to-end ticketing services.

Many use cases are currently being developed in transport networks using the Calypso standard.
